Domestic violence, also commonly referred to as “intimate partner violence” is an American epidemic. Usually understood as the abuse of a spouse or romantic partner, domestic violence may also describe the victimization of children, elderly relatives, or other family members.<\/p>\n

Domestic violence can include different types of abuse and may manifest in a variety of ways, such as:<\/p>\n

\uff08a\uff09<\/strong>Physical violence that can lead to injuries such as bruises, cuts, or fractures (broken bones);<\/p>\n

\uff08b\uff09<\/strong>Sexual violence, including sexual assault;<\/p>\n

\uff08c\uff09<\/strong>Emotional abuse, which includes threats, name-calling, put-downs, and humiliation. It can also involve controlling behavior, such as telling the victim how to act or dress and not letting the victim see family or friends;<\/p>\n

\uff08d\uff09<\/strong>Economic abuse, or controlling access to money;<\/p>\n

\uff08e\uff09<\/strong>Stalking, which is repeated, unwanted contact that causes fear or concern for the safety of the victim. This can include watching or following the victim. There may also be a digital component where a stalker sends repeated, unwanted phone calls, texts, or social media messages.<\/p>\n
